OUR MONOPOLE VINEYARDS

On 34 hectares we cultivate 90% Riesling, 5% Pinot Noir and 5% Pinot Blanc with the highest quality standards and fermented spontaneously. The wines grow on three monopole vineyards directly opposite of the estate. All vineyards are classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGEN and are named after the monastery hierarchy Bruderberg, Herrenberg and Abtsberg. Wine grows here which is renowned around the world.

ABTSBERG

The ABTSBERG is without question our estate's most renowned vineyard site, famous for producing wines of almost peerless longevity. Its bedrock is blue Devonian slate, forming a rounded summit that opens up from southeast to southwest. The estate’s finest parcels are located at the heart of that cone, which reaches gradients of up to 75%.  While the full length of the 14-hectare ABTSBERG transitions seamlessly into the HERRENBERG to the west, the soil tends to be shallower and more fossil-rich here. This heightened minerality is reflected in its wines as well. In addition to Riesling, we also cultivate Pinot Noir on the ABTSBERG.

HERRENBERG

A portion of this 19-hectare site abuts the ABTSBERG and shares many of its characteristics, including soil composition and orientation. Toward the rear, however, the site is ringed by the Grüneberg forest and tends to be both cooler and flatter.  Devonian slate is predominant here, despite the soil’s slight reddish hue. In the past, these wines were sometimes considered the little brother to bottles from the ABTSBERG. Yet as climatic conditions have shifted in recent years, these Rieslings have achieved a remarkable glory entirely their own. Wines from the HERRENBERG are known for aging beautifully, even over decades. Both Riesling and Pinot Blanc are cultivated here.

BRUDERBERG

The BRUDERBERG is the smallest and coolest of our estate's sites. Measuring just one hectare and dominated by the same blue Devonian slate as the ABTSBERG, the site is exclusively planted with Riesling. The nearby forest provides an effective shelter against cool air from the northwest. The early morning sun and early evening shade make it a crucible for lively, racy Rieslings.
